Highlander McLaren disappeared from Checkpoint Salaang in in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province on 4th July. After an extensive all-out 17-hour air and land search, McLaren’s body was located in a canal with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. Defence sources confirmed he had been ambushed by Taliban forces minutes after leaving his disappearance - then stripped of his equipment and shot. McLaren is the first UK soldier to be kidnapped and executed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Cpl Pike was taking part in a security operation near Pupalzay, Helmand Province, when the patrol came under fire from rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Eyewitnesses said Cpl Pike "didn't go down without a fight" and was offering covering fire when he was killed. on June 3, 2011.

L/Cpl Tasker and his partner Theo (bomb sniffer dog) came under small arms fire while the pair were on patrol in Helmand province March 1, 2011. Tasker was killed by a Taliban sniper. Uninjured in the assault, Theo died several hours later of a seizure. Described by colleagues as an inseparable team, Theo was praised by the Ministry of Defence for making 14 finds of hidden bombs and weapons caches in just five months - a record for a dog and handler.
